I was looking at a Satsuma rebellion sword and it had a strange same substitute. It sold for more than I could afford, but I'm still curious what it is. Any ideas?

From the pictures it looks like sharks teeth under the Tsuka binding - this is very unusaul...

Neil
Thanks.
Thanks Neil, I also thought it looked like teeth. Can't help wondering how would they be fixed on? And why? The same helps hold the tsuka together, this would be purely decorative. I couldn't find any others like it online, but it seems there are lots of oddities in the "satsuma" swords.
