Takada Yukinaga (Shinto): The 3. Gen. Yukinaga was one of the important representatives of Kanbun Shinto. During the second half of the 1600s katana design changed throughout the country. Current research attributes these changes to the significant decrease in warfare after the beginning of the Edo period. A system of power struggles developed among the samurai, with individual duels with a katana. These duels primarily involved styles in which the thrusting action with the katana became increasingly important. Consequently, the construction shifted towards longer blades with a smaller sori and a shorter kissaki. The third generation of Yukinaga was renowned for this style as well as for the exceptional sharpness of its swords (Ryo-Wazamono). The katana presented here is a prime example of Kanbun Shinto.
Therefore I bought it from an American sword enthusiast even without any further documentation. The signature and all other characteristics are consistent, and Fujiwara-Takada katanas were not targets of forgery.
